Kuumba (Creativity): To do always as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it
Kuumba was always my favorite day because I get to share with my loved ones all the things I truly pour my heart and soul into. I love making things; pretty things, delicious things, unusual things. My son draws and paints. My husband composes and mixes music….
And my daughter, the Classical and Jazz musician…she often laments her non singing voice or two left feet or chicken-scratch…but she solves problems. She changes and modifies and makes things that didn’t exist until she needed them.
As a people, we don’t often recognize talent that has no drama or entertainment value. We celebrate the singer but know nothing of the problem solver behind the modern microphone (Dr. James E. West).
We proudly and loudly support the best athletes in the world, and buy anything with their name on it…but do we know what actually made those “Jordans” possible (Jan Ernst Matzeliger)?
So…a challenge…perhaps even a bit of research is necessary…thinking outside the box, doing something differently, working smarter-not harder…what do you know how to do…what do you need to learn…what do you need to create…what, specifically, can you do to leave our community better than we found it?
